ROCKET BEARS: I just can't continue watching Gurren Lagann anymore, because after Tiger & Bunny entered my life all other anime seems... ›
Bland? BLAND?! GURREN LAGANN?!!
JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM!?
This ain’t directed at the OP, I’m just amused and will now jump on my
soap boxcocoa can. Gurren Lagann is like…an entirely different level of anime. It’s too good to even be compared to T&B and I ADORE…Okay, hold up you guys. Gurren Lagann is, I agree, an entirely different level of anime. I love it. It is effectively incomparable to any other series, except maybe some other Gainax stuff like FLCL.
But comparing it to classic literature is just… what the hell, man. Gurren Lagann is the most awesomely ridiculous and ridiculously awesome thing you will ever read or see, but it is not in any way high storytelling. It is an extraordinarily well-executed almost-parody. It develops meaningful characters in the context of mocking every single shounen anime trope ever.
If I was going to compare it to any high-quality novels, I would pick something like Discworld. Not Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings. I don’t even know where you would get that.
Tiger and Bunny I’ve just started so I can’t really make any meaningful comparisons, but it doesn’t seem as though it’s going to be an EPIC SAGA and let’s be honest, that’s what LotR is. I’m sure it’s very good, though. (That’s why I’ve started it.)
(p.s. please don’t take offense I just think these comparisons are hilarious)
Okay, guys guys guys (and this goes for most of the people who commented on this post), when I made this post I didn’t mean to start a war between Gurren Lagann and Tiger & Bunny. I’m sure Gurren Lagann is a great anime, but I have not finished watching it and I am currently in a state where I am much more engrossed and entertained by the Tiger & Bunny story line than the Gurren Lagann story line. I feel more connected to the Tiger & Bunny characters than the Gurren Lagann characters, not to mention that I like the atmosphere and setting better in Tiger & Bunny. I also find Tiger & Bunny more visually pleasing than Gurren Lagann. These are all just OPINIONS, and I don’t claim that Gurren Lagann is objectively better than Tiger & Bunny (how could I? I’ve finished watching neither).
But with my love towards super heroes and indifference towards mecha, things just are the way they are.
PS. Of course I will finish watching Gurren Lagann even though I don’t find it very entertaining right now. I do want to give it a fair chance after all.
PPS. Who’s to say you can’t like both animes?
